FAQs
1 / Do I need to stay with my child during the workshop?
If you child is 13 or younger, a parent or guardian is required to stay with them. For children 14 or older, you are welcome to accompany them on the workshop.
2 / How long do workshops run for?
Our workshops are 90-120 minutes in duration. If you need to leave early, let us know at the beginning so we can plan our walk accordingly.
3 / Will my child receive 1:1 coaching during the workshop?
Our workshops have 1:5 teacher:student ratio, so you child will get individual attention during the session. We will teach them the technical and artistic aspects of photography. They will learn the basics of how to use a digital SLR camera like holding the camera, focussing on subject, zoom function, viewing images, landscape and portrait orientations. They will learn about paying mindful attention to what's around them, slowing down, picking good subjects, composition (e.g. getting closer, excluding distractions, trying different angles), and quality of light.
Once they learn the basics, we will teach them how to adjust elements of the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) for depth of field, fast moving subjects and in low light conditions.
4 / Will food or snacks be provided for my child?
We do not provide any drinks, or snacks for the participants. Please bring a water bottle and any snacks that they may need for the outing.
5 / What happens to the photos the children take after?
You will receive digital copies of their best pictures, which you can download and share with family and friends. Their photos may also be published in books and the Compassionate Nature magazine. See our terms and conditions below for more details.
6 / Who are the photography teachers?
IMAgEN8’s professional photography tutors bring a diversity of experiences, styles and interests. They are easy going, fun and enthusiastic, and you’ll enjoy them guiding your photography learning with their friendly style and insights from their years of combined experience. You’ll feel confident about using a digital SLR camera, like the ones professionals use, in the company of a small group of nature and photography lovers.

7 / What sort of equipment will the children use during the workshop?
The children will use digital single lens reflex (SLR) cameras from Canon and Nikon like the Canon 3000D and Nikon D3500. These professional quality cameras with high-quality interchangeable lenses produce images of amazing clarity, colour and sharpness. We also bring 70-300mm Zoom lenses to some of our workshops to get those bird images. See our camera page for more details.
8 / What local reserves are workshops held in?
Our workshops are held at nature reserves, regional parks, beaches, gardens, schools and other natural spaces like Auckland Botanic Gardens, Tahuna Torea Reserve, Long Bay Regional Park. Visit our locations page to see a map of all the places we conduct our workshops. We are continuously expanding the list of locations to offer new experiences to children.
9 / How do I arrange for a photography workshop to be held at my school?
